Southern California doesn't get many cold nights, which means many fireplaces sit unused for most of the year. That makes the first fire of the season the riskiest.
What builds up
Wood smoke leaves creosote on the inside of the flue. It starts as soot and can harden into a shiny, tar-like layer. All of it is flammable. Birds' nests, leaves and debris can also block the flue during the months it isn't used.
Signs your chimney needs attention
- A strong smoky smell, especially on warm days
- Smoke drifting into the room
- Black, flaky buildup in the firebox
- No inspection in the past year
How often
The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends an annual inspection for chimneys that are used. We sweep chimneys and clean fireplaces across Pico Rivera and nearby cities.
